SPRING WORK ON THE LAWN
PRELIMINARY WORKS
CLEANING
First 2 weeks
of May As soon as the ground is dry, rake the lawn with a leaf rake to remove dead grass and winter debris (sand, branches, leaves, stones, etc.)
AERATION
If the soil is compacted Aerate the lawn with: hobnailed shoes, cleat board, pitchfork) 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) deep; carrot fork or mechanical aerator 1.25-4 cm (0.5-1.5 inch) deep). In soil rich in organic matter, earthworms take care of this work. You can add sifted compost after aeration.
ROLLING
Early in spring Roll to strengthen the lawn that has been lifted by frost, not to level it. Do this when the grass is dry and the ground is damp. Clean the lawn beforehand: remove worm castings, surface debris, etc.
REPAIR
SOWING
After May 15 Sow damaged, sparse areas with seed adapted to the amount of sunlight on your land and soil conditions.
GRASSING
BY PLATES
From the end of April Install plates in damaged or sparse areas.
FERTILIZATION
ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS 1.0 to 2.0 kg of nitrogen per 100 m² (1,000 ft²). If the cut grass is left on the ground, the requirements are half as much: 0.5 to 1.0 kg.
Maximum application: 0.5 to 0.75 kg of nitrogen/100m².
ORGANIC FERTILIZATION
From mid-May 1 or 2 treatments: one in spring, one in fall (mid-August to early September)
Commercial fertilizer:
- Natura de Canagro (40 kg/500 m²) in 3 applications
- Bio-Gazon from Mc Innes (60 kg/500 m²) in one or two applications.
LAYING
BIOLOGICAL
At 2-3 years old,
in spring or
in autumn To make the lawn bushier and more vigorous.
Compost, manure, or garden soil:
1/4"-1/2" (50 kg/100 m²???, 0.5 kg/m², 0.1 lbs/ft², 1 yd³/10,000 ft²)
CHEMICAL FERTILIZATION
From mid-May Soluble or granular fertilizer:
4 treatments: nitrogen fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer and herbicide, nitrogen fertilizer and insecticide, low nitrogen fertilizer.
MIXED LOTTING
At 2-3 years old,
in spring or
in autumn To make the lawn bushier and more vigorous.
For 90 m² (1000 ft²) of lawn, mix: - 2 bales of 100 liters (3.8 ft³) of sphagnum peat; - 150 liters (5 cubic feet) of vermiculite; - 6 kg of lawn fertilizer, like 10-20-5; - 2.5 kg of grass seed
Mow the lawn first. Apply the peat by hand, the vermiculite and the fertilizer with the spreader, the seed with the shoulder seeder. Rake by penetrating between the blades of grass. Water thoroughly and keep moist until the seed germinates.
MOWING
CUTTING HEIGHTS Make the first clear cut at 3.5-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) in height; afterwards, between 6-8 cm (2.5-3.25 inches).
WEEDING
At the end of spring Occasional weeding, by hand or with a total herbicide, for low infestations. Weeding with a selective herbicide for larger areas.
NOTE: Do not drive on wet ground to avoid compacting it.
